Links-R-Us, Vol. 13

Welcome to another Link-Friday.  The type of news that I like to post has been pretty tame as of late so it has taken almost three weeks to come up with my standard five links.  I know that there really has been plenty of news occurring, but all of it has been rather depressing and that’s really not the purpose of Link-Friday in my mind…  My vision for Link-Friday has always been semi-comical and thought provoking without being depressing.  So, on that note, let the clicking of links begin!
The following link is one that is sad, comical and befuddling.  The link is to a story of a 70 year old father that shoots his 50 year old son for singing a Kenny Chesney song.  It’s really confusing and sad that this happened…  But, it really makes me laugh to think that I can empathize with the father due to the son’s selection of music.  Go figure.
This next link comes to us from LifeHacker.  This link talks about how to get your monthly bills reduced by making a couple of phone calls each year.  I tried this once with Dish Network a few years ago only to be severely stonewalled.  Needless to say it may not work for all of your bills (I’d also suggest not trying it with your mortgage…  I’m just sayin’…)
The following link is to an article / video clip of a dad and his take on his daughter’s use of social media.  Apparently the father felt that his daughter and her friends comments concerning a punishment he had given her wasn’t quite appropriate.  So, in true news of the weird fashion, the daughter’s laptop and the father’s gun had an appointment in the backyard.
Our next link is to an article that, as a parent, I look at with quite a bit of anger.  The link is to a story about a Raeford, North Carolina Pre-School student who was told her nutritious school lunch wasn’t up to state nutrition standards.  I’ll be honest, I’m siding with the mother on this one.  I have a picky eater who has soooooo many allergies that I would never be able to field something to their standards.  With that being said, the real rub of this story is that the lunch DID conform to their standards and yet the child was forced to eat three chicken nuggets and not her lunch.  I’ve heard of “Big Brother” watching us, but…really?!?  Our lunches?!?
Our final link comes from a follow up to the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympic Games.  For the past few weeks, Utah has been celebrating the tenth anniversary of hosting the Winter Olympics.  This is a link to an article about the pair figure skaters that were given second place due to a crooked judge.  Why would I include this?  Well, looking back at things, it is one of the most memorable moments for me about the games.  All my life I had assumed that things were actually fair at the Olympics.  The second that they were cheated out of their outright win they became the underdogs.  And, who doesn’t like a good story about the underdogs prevailing?
I really hope that this selection of links were able to assist in putting life back into perspective a little bit.  Sometimes it feels as though we are bombarded by a constant stream of negative items.  I really hope that my Link-Fridays are not part of that problem but more of a break from it.  Thanks!
