Links-R-Us, Vol. 14

Once again Link-Friday is upon us.  After the last few months of extremely depressing news, it’s good to be finding things that are uplifting and inspiring to post (despite being so long between posts).  And, on that note, here we go…
The following link talks about how the state of Nevada has just authorized cars to be driverless.  Hmmm…  Driverless cars…  That’s actually one “Science Fiction” item that will be pretty cool to have.  How many of us would love to be able to do something other than watch the road while driving the 700+ miles to get to Aunt Bertha’s house?
Our next link is filled with irony.  This link is to a story about an animal rights group that wanted to film a live pigeon shoot at a hunting club.  The animal rights group put up a huge stink about the hunt, threatening to video tape it with a remote controlled drone, which ultimately caused the hunt to be canceled.  The animal rights group decided to send the drone up “just in case” and had it immediately shot down by the members of the hunting club.  Now I really don’t want to take sides on this one, but I gotta ask one question:  What did the tree-huggers think would happen if they put the drone in the air?  It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that one out!
This next link is to a feel good story about a boy having his wish fulfilled by the Make-A-Wish foundation.  Having a nephew who had his wish fulfilled by Make-A-Wish, most articles about them are dear to my heart.  What makes this one stand out is that the boy got to fly in a military trainer thanks to some fundraising by high school kids that didn’t even know him.
The following link is to an article about creating and using budgets.  This link talks about some of the free software that exists on the web to allow you to track you expenditures.  It also has links to some pretty cool calculators that allow you to type in some of your expenses and see how they stack up to the averages in the areas you live.
This last link is to a story / video about a young man from Romanian who launched a Lego Space Shuttle into space on a weather balloon.  Not trying to take anything away from this amazing achievement, but I have a huge pet peeve to rant about thanks to the author of the article.  In the article the author writes, “the space shuttle program ended in July of 2011 with the return of the Atlantic shuttle.”  The Atlantic shuttle?  There was never a space shuttle named Atlantic.  Atlantis, yes; Atlantic, no.  And this article was in the Science & Innovation section of KSL.com.  Messing up that bad in the first paragraph of your article really makes one wonder what type of fact checking and editing goes into “real” non-fluff reporting…  And, with the conclusion of my rant, enjoy the video!
I intentionally saved the following question about our first link for the end of my post, “How are driverless cars inspiring and uplifting?”  Well, to be honest, I thought it’s pretty neat that there are some things that might occur in my lifetime that will make our ability to interact with those we love a lot easier to do.  Think about being locked in a car, driving thousands of miles with your family and using that time to get to know each other better by playing games instead of hiding in electronics, etc.  That’s what’s inspiring about driverless cars to me – the added interaction without having to concentrate on the road.
And with that though, I leave you until next time…
