Links-R-Us, Vol. 8

Wow…  It’s been a while since I last posted something – too long for my comfort.
When I started blogging, I had two main goals I wanted to accomplish: blog often and blog something that would be interesting for the reader.   Call it my “all-you-can-eat” buffet of thoughts – lots of good food that you return for often…  Unfortunately the quantity hasn’t quite worked out as well as I had hoped, but with any luck the quality of the content has been satisfying for those who have chosen to partake…  I thank you for listening to me rant, but that’s not what I’m writing about today.  Today is once again Link-Friday!
Today I am starting with a couple of similar links.  The first is the movie trailer for part one of The Hobbit.  The movie isn’t scheduled to come out until a year from now, but the first trailer is up and it looks good!  The second link is the announcement of Lego: Lord of the Rings for game systems.  I have four children waiting with baited breath for that puppy to show up.  Unfortunately, it isn’t scheduled to come out until July 2012.  Enjoy:
Our next link is one that makes me want to go, “Huh?!?”  It seems that there was this police officer who had life imitate television.  Remember all of those annoying State Farm commercials about the former State Farm member who drove his car up a poll?  Well, you guessed it, a police officer was “distracted” by something that he dropped in his car while driving and managed to drive his patrol car up a pole.  Hmmm…  This is one of those rare times when we get to see that a policeman is human too:
One of the things you can count on during the holiday season is that all the news organizations start to run “feel good” stories.  I almost enjoy watching the news during this time of the year because there is so much positive being reported.  So, link number three is about a person who started to randomly pay off people’s layaway accounts.  This craze has been popping up all over the nation since the original story broke, but I’m pretty sure that this is the link to the original:
Our next link is one of those bizarre “Top 10” lists that seem to be all the rage on the internet currently.  This link is to the “10 Chilling Super Nerdy Snow Sculptures.”  What else is there to say?  If you’re into sci-fi and fantasy then this might be the link for you:
Our final link this week is to one that is dear to my heart.  As you might have guessed from my blog, I have a lot of respect and admiration for those who are willing to put their lives on the line in the name of duty in order for me and my family to be protected.  I may point out a weakness or flaw every now and again (hence the policeman and pole story above), but I try not to do that to criticize – I do it as an attempt to keep me from elevating soldiers, police officers and firefighters above the level of human.  These are men and women who do what is necessary each day in order to help us be safe.  It’s a choice that they make to put themselves between harm and my family; and I thank them for it.
So, with that said, this is a local story about a police officer who responded to a call of a bus hitting a pedestrian and stopping with her still trapped underneath it.  This officer chose to crawl under the bus to check on the victim and decided to stay to help her through this.  That wasn’t his job, that wasn’t the safest thing to do while the firefighters jacked up the bus; but it was the quality that makes this officer a hero in my eyes.  Here are two links to the story – the first is the local link and the second is to where it was picked up nationally and was in the Washington Post:
And, with that wonderful story I bring to an end once again Link-Friday.  May all of your holidays this year be filled with love and joy!
