The Hobbit was some of what I expected and quite a few things different. Did it match the hype? Not totally. Was it grandiose? Sure. Was it well done? Yup. So, here’s the run down.
I have two pet peeves with the moving. The first occurs when talking to people about this movie and their dislikes of the songs are brought up. While the dwarves are making their plans at Bilbo’s house they sing a song during the cleanup of dinner that, to quote my coworkers, was “Goofy.” The sad irony was that the song in question was taken word for word directly from the book. Tolkien always found a way to add humor to his work, and one of my favorites has always been that song. In the movie, no amount of acting on Bilbo’s part would have ever done justice to the words that Tolkien used to describe him during clean up after dinner.
My second pet peeve is that Peter Jackson eliminated that each dwarf wore a different colored cloak and hood. That came into play later during the story to help Bilbo figure out something. (No spoilers here…). Anyway, just the ramblings of a purist… Sorry.
It has also been said that Peter Jackson added things that were not in the books. Mr. Jackson was perfectly clear and upfront when he said that he was going to fill in some of the gaps with Tolkien’s timeline during the three part movie. Without once again sending out spoilers I have to say that he did add things that fill in the timeline (and will later be revealed) that are consistent with Tolkien’s other writings and notes. No complaints here except for Radagast’s bird nest visuals…
So… How would I rate the movie? Here are, once again, my standard six questions to consider:
1. Would I consider watching The Hobbit 3+ hours of my life that I want back? No
2. Would I go see it again? Yes
3. How about at the dollar theater? Yes
4. Is this a movie that I’m going to buy? Yes – I already have it in my collection.
5. What about the rating? You can fudge it a little – I took my 10 year old to it during my first viewing. Definitely not my five year old, however…
6. How does this movie rate compared to similar movies? Not quite up to the Lord of the Rings standard, but pretty cool none the less.
With all that being said, enjoy The Hobbit. Just remember to treat it as a story that’s not cannon to the books.
